In today's fast-paced (often chaotic) world, we are bombarded by endless notifications, news cycles, and busy schedules. It usually feels impossible to find a moment of peace. I've faced challenges in carving out time for prayer and reflection, all while yearning to hear God’s gentle whispers amid the noise. I'm still learning how to do this Christian thing well, but I'm finding that cultivating certain practices helps quiet the noise around me.
(And let's name it: Yes, I'm posting this two weeks before the election because, while we need peace always, I think it's essential during this season.)

Understanding the Noise
We live in an age overflowing with information. Daily, we face a flood of messages from social media, news outlets, and the ceaseless chatter of our own minds. Research shows that, on average, people spend over 2 hours daily on social media alone. This relentless stream of information can drown out God's voice, leaving us spiritually disconnected.
There's always something vying for our attention—Facebook, TikTok, kids, spouse, work emails—it's endless. This contributes to a spirit of anxiousness because we don't know how to disconnect to re-connect with the ones (and One) who really matter.
The Importance of Stillness
A fundamental step in my faith journey so far was embracing stillness. The Bible frequently emphasizes the value of quietness. Psalm 46:10 urges us to "Be still, and know that I am God." I've only recently begun to understand that to hear God’s voice, I have to carve out time for stillness in my life.
I began with just five minutes of focused silence each day. I would find a comfortable, peaceful spot to sit, close my eyes, and breathe deeply. (Pro-Tip: If you've never practiced 4-7-8 breathing, I'd highly recommend it! Especially for my friends with anxiety. Breathe in for four seconds, hold for seven, and release for eight. Do as long as you can until you feel your shoulders and jaws dropping and unclenching.)
Initially, my mind spiraled with thoughts about upcoming tasks, the latest headlines, and the embarrassing things I'd done that day. However, as I practiced this discipline regularly, I gradually found it easier to set aside those distractions and be fully present in my body and the moment.
Now, be clear: this was hard. It IS hard. I am not a meditation girly. It is so, SO challenging to force myself to be grounded and present fully in the moment. But God honors our efforts, and the longer I force myself to cultivate this habit, the more peace I've found.
Creating a Sacred Space
In addition to stillness, I learned the importance of creating a sacred space for my spiritual practices. Dedicating a specific area in my home helped foster an environment suitable for prayer journalling and talking to God.
I filled this space with meaningful items: a cherished journal, a few favorite books, and a candle I love. Each time I entered this area, my mindset shifted toward focusing on God.
This physical separation made my prayers feel more intentional and helped me create a refuge where I could deepen my relationship with God without the world’s distractions.
I know, I know. It sounds super...well, churchy. But creating sacred space helps us create safe spaces to fall apart and let God put us back together again.

Practicing Mindfulness
Mindfulness exercises have profoundly enhanced my ability to hear God more clearly. Incorporating these practices into my faith journey helped me embrace the present moment without feeling overwhelmed.
One of my favorite exercises is taking a simple walk in nature—a quick way to connect with God’s creation. During these walks, I focus on the sights, sounds, and smells around me. For instance, I became more aware of the stunning colors of the leaves and the gentle sounds of rustling grass. This practice not only grounds me at the moment but also turns into a time of meditative prayer, where I express gratitude and become more attuned to God's presence.
Pro Tip: Try walking in a nearby park or natural setting once a week. Observe your surroundings and use this time for reflection and prayer.
Incorporating Scripture
An essential aspect of my journey was weaving Scripture into my daily life. I began reading biblical passages not merely as text but as living water that nourished my spirit.
During my deconstruction phase, I discovered verses that resonated deeply with my evolving mindset. Memorizing key verses, like Philippians 4:6-7, which discusses a peace that surpasses understanding, became vital. This not only provided comfort but also reminded me that peace is both an active pursuit and a gift from God.
In turbulent moments, reciting Scripture shifted my focus back to God, providing guidance and discernment. It reminded me that His voice is ever-present, even amid chaos.
Setting Boundaries
Learning to set boundaries proved to be one of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of my journey. Realizing that I couldn’t do everything was essential. I started limiting my social media and news consumption, making room for quieter activities.
When I first deleted social media app icons from my phone, it felt strange. However, I soon discovered that these boundaries opened prayer, journaling, and reading opportunities. The relief was palpable as I felt my heart and mind lighten.
Expert Insight: Consider establishing “digital detox” times during your day, where you focus on prayer, reflection, or just being present in the moment.
Journey Toward Serenity
Finding peace in our noisy world is a deliberate journey. Through simple practices of stillness, mindfulness, Scripture, and boundary-setting, I have begun to hear God’s voice more clearly.
Remember, amid the chaos, God is constantly communicating with us. We must quiet the noise and open our hearts to His guidance. We can create a life filled with peace and a deeper relationship with Christ by taking small, manageable steps.
Let's embark on this journey together, supporting one another as we navigate life's ups and downs! Quiet the noise, and listen anew for God’s gentle whispers guiding you through the chaos.
